Ingredients

  • 1 kg chicken drumsticks
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce preferably low-sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper or to taste

Instructions

  • Start by patting the chicken drumsticks dry with paper towels. This step is important because removing excess moisture helps the seasoning stick better and allows the flavors to penetrate the meat. Once dry, season the drumsticks evenly with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika, making sure each piece is well coated for a balanced, flavorful base.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, add the BBQ sauce and olive oil, then stir everything together until the mixture becomes smooth and slightly glossy. This combination helps thin out the sauce slightly, making it easier to coat the chicken evenly while also adding richness and preventing dryness during cooking.
  • Place the seasoned drumsticks into the crockpot, arranging them in a single layer if possible so they cook evenly. If you need to stack them, try to keep the thicker pieces at the bottom. Pour the prepared BBQ sauce mixture over the chicken, then use a spoon or your hands to gently coat each drumstick so they are fully covered in the sauce.
  • Cover the crockpot with its lid and set it to cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours. During this time, the chicken will slowly become tender and absorb all the smoky, savory flavors from the sauce. Avoid opening the lid too often, as this releases heat and can extend the cooking time.
  • Once the cooking time is complete, carefully remove the drumsticks using tongs. Be gentle while handling them, as the meat will be very soft and may start to fall off the bone due to the slow cooking process.
  • For an extra layer of texture, transfer the cooked drumsticks onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper and place them under the oven broiler for 3 to 5 minutes. This step helps caramelize the BBQ sauce, creating slightly crispy, sticky edges that add a delicious contrast to the tender interior. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.
  • Remove the drumsticks from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making each bite even more flavorful and juicy. Serve warm for the best taste and texture.
